Why artificial turf and artificial grass start to smell

Dog urine drains through the turf, but some of it stays behind in the infill and the backing. As it breaks down, bacteria turn it into ammonia, which is the sharp smell you notice. Heat speeds that process up, which is why the odor is strongest on hot afternoons and why desert yards get it worse than most.

Deodorizing sprays mask the smell for a few days. To stop it coming back, the residue itself has to be broken down and flushed out.

Our pet turf cleaning and odor process

Find the hot spots. Dogs tend to use the same few areas. We locate them so treatment goes where it's needed most.
Flush. Problem areas are rinsed to move loose residue out through the drainage backing.
Enzyme treatment. An enzyme cleaner is worked into the infill, where it breaks down the urine compounds that cause odor.
Brush and finish. We brush the treatment in and groom the fibers so the whole lawn looks even.

Honest note: If urine has soaked into the base under the turf for years, one treatment will reduce the smell a lot but may not remove it completely. In that case, regular treatments or an odor-control infill are the next steps, and we'll tell you that up front.

As long as dogs use the turf, new urine keeps landing in it, so some odor will build back up over time. Treatment removes what's there now. How long it stays fresh depends on the number of dogs, how often you rinse, and the heat.

When can my dog go back on the turf after treatment?

Once the treated area is dry. We use enzyme products made for pet areas on synthetic turf and follow the label directions. Ask us and we'll tell you which product we're using.

Can you treat just the dog run instead of the whole yard?

Yes. Many customers only need the pet area treated. Send us photos and we'll quote just that area.
